Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of trans-theoretical
model on drug abstinence self efficacy and how to use cognitive emotion regulation strategies among
male addicts.
Materials & Methods: This study was designed by a pretest-posttest with control and experimental
groups. The population of the study included all male addicts 15-30 years old selected by cluster
multistage sampling method. For this purpose, 5 centers from State Welfare Organization of Ahwaz
and from each center 6 ones were selected randomly and allocated to an experimental and a control
group (each group including 15). The experimental group received 15 sessions training transtheoretical
model group therapy and the control group did not receive any intervention. The
instruments used in this study were questionnaires of Drug Abstinence self efficacy of Martin Golman
and questionnaire of cognitive emotion regulation strategies of Garnefski that participants answered
them in pre-test and post-test. In order to analyze the results, descriptive statistical methods and
covariance analysis were used.
Results: The result showed that there is a significant difference (p<0.0001) between experimental
group and control group in terms of Drug Abstinence self efficacy and the cognitive emotion
regulation strategies used at groups Also the level of Drug Abstinence self efficacy and how to use the
cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the experimental group was significantly more than the
control group.
Conclusion: Trans-theoretical Model is one of the cognitive-behavioral therapies that can promote
Drug Abstinence self efficacy and kind of using the cognitive emotion regulation strategies in
substance abusers.
