Abstract
Family members are one of the essential components of care for patients with
chronic diseases such as chronic renal failure. Training caregivers and family members can increase
patients quality of life and prevent readmission of them. this study aimed to determine the
effectiveness of family centered care educational programs on home care knowledge of caregivers of
patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis in urmia Imam Khomeini and Taleghani
Hospitals.
Materials & Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental study. Total of 120 caregivers of patients
with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis with simple random sampling in Taleghani and
Imam Khomeini Hospital were chosen. And were classified to the four group including: class
education, booklet education, booklet and class education and the control group. At first step
caregivers knowledge was measured using a researcher made questionnaire, then home care program
for caring hemodialysis patients was conducted for caregivers, and After two months caregivers
knowledge was assessed using the same questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using
descriptive and analytical statistical procedures and by SPSS v16 software.
Results: The results of the study showed that the mean scores in all dimensions in each group before
the intervention was not significantly different. mean scores differences between the samples
Showed that experimental groups caregivers Knowledge mean scores in all dimensions after the
intervention was greater than control group. And this increase in all dimensions after the intervention
was statistically significant. General knowledge scores differences samples Showed that General
knowledge mean scores among all groups increased after the intervention. This increase in General
knowledge was statistically significant (P=0/000).
Conclusion: Considering the results of this study it can be concluded that family-centered care
education is effective in promotion knowledge of hemodialysis patients caregivers. Family-centered
care can improve the physical and psychological aspect of patients with renal failure and enhance the
quality of life for patients
