Abstract

The present paper aims at investigating the relationship between social capital and its dimensions with mental health among Kohdasht nursing staff as well as determining each dimension’s contribution to predict their mental health. Materials & Methods: The study is applied in terms of aim and descriptive-correlational in terms of data collection method. The target population consists of all Kohdasht nursing staff which amounts to 161nurses. A sample of 113 was randomly selected. A researcher-made questionnaire of social capital and general health questionnaire (GHQ-28) with reliability of 0.87 and 0.94 respectively were implemented for data collection. To analyze the data, descriptive and inferential techniques such as frequency, correlation and regression were applied. Results: According to the findings, there is a positive relationship between social capital and nurses’ mental health. In addition, it was revealed that there is a positive relationship between social capital dimensions and nurses’ mental health. Findings also revealed that relational and cognitive social capital could predict nurses’ mental health, but on the other hand, structural social capital turned out not to be a appropriate factor for the prediction of nurses’ mental health. Conclusion : We suggest that hospital administration board should pay attention to and take care of social capital so that nurses could keep up decent work regardless of work-related stress
