Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome is the cyclic appearance of physical, psycho and
behavioral syndrome which occurs at luteal phase in the menstrual cycle, so that it can effect
academic performance, and social and family relationships. This study has been conducted in a oneblind clinical trial to determine the effects of soy on premenstrual syndrome in female students of
Semnan University Dormitory.
Materials & Methods: In this study after completing of a questionnaire during 2 consecutive cycles,
90 female students (age 18-24 years) has been selected with moderate-severe premenstrual syndrome
who had necessary parameters to enter the study, then the subjects were randomly divided in two
case-control groups, 40 person for each of the case and control groups respectively. The case group
received soy consisted in a biscuit that provides a total of 50 gr. ISP ,containing 50 mg isoflavone
(IS). The control group took placebo that were identical in appearance and taste to the soy biscuit but
it contained ordinary flour instead of isoflavone for two menstrual cycles . The data were collected by
using a questionnaire, Mens daily calendar, and symptom scoring tables.
Results: The study showed that the means of scores for total physical symptoms of premenstrual
syndrome between case and control groups had significant difference during first and second
treatment cycles (p<0/01). It also showed that the means of scores for total psychological symptom of
premenstrual syndrome between case and control groups had significant difference only during
second treatment cycles (p<0/01). The means of scores for total behavioral symptoms of premenstrual
syndrome between case and control groups had no significant difference during first and second
treatment cycles (p>0/05). The means of premenstrual syndrome duration had significant difference
between case and control groups during second treatment cycles (p<0/01).
Conclusion: In seems that soy bean can reduce physical and psychological signs of premenstrual
syndrome during menstrual cycle.
