Abstract

In the last 30 years, gynecologic laparoscopy has become a major surgical tool used to treat a multitude of gynecologic indications such as acute or chronic abdominal or pelvic pain, infertility etc. Today, laparoscopy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by gynecologists. This study aimed to evaluate the usage, causes, and the results of laparoscopy procedure in patients referring to Urmia Kosar hospital since 2005 to 2009. Materials & Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 112 patients who underwent laparoscopy procedure in a five-year period. The data were collected from their medical records and analyzed by descriptive statistics and SPSS software. Result: 64 patients out of 112 (57.4 %) were 21-29 years old and in this group infertility was the main cause of laparoscopy (86.6%); and almost in all others it was a chronic pelvic pain. The main risk factors leading to laparoscopy were as follows: primary infertility (63%), secondary infertility (23.2%), history of previous appendectomy (7.1%), caesarean section (6.3%), abdominal surgery (5.4%), and in the end ectopic pregnancy and reparative surgery (each 0.09%). Conclusion: Gynecologic laparoscopy has become the best alternate for operation and reduces postoperative pain, costs, risk of adhesions, infection, and shortens hospital stay.
