Abstract

Stress is how the body reacts to physical and psychological stressors. Drug addiction makes drug use a compelling need, not a casual choice. When an addict uses no drugs, feels stressed or unhappy and is in need of support and care. This study aimed to offer effective guidance on stress coping strategies in rehabilitating cases. Materials & Methods: In this descriptive analytical study all addicts in drug rehabilitation centers in Sanandaj and Kamyaran were evaluated. One hundred and twenty volunteers filled out the questioners. The statistical analyses were carried out by the SPSS program. Results: The overall prevalence in this population were 98.3% male, 52.2% married, 47.5% between 20-29 years old age, and 23.3% were addicted from one to four years. Effective coping strategies during recovery yielded the following findings: in low level 9.2%; in medium 30.8%, and in high levels 30.8%. Negative responses to stress were in low level 19.2%; in medium 73.3%, and in high levels 7.5%. The findings revealed a statistically significant relationship between age, marital status, drug addiction period, effective stress coping strategies (p<0.03). Conclusion: Considering the significant differences in negative reactions to stress, there must be programs for the treatment of recovering addicts to reduce the negative responses to stress by themselves. It seems that stress coping skills training is necessary in prevention of addiction and in the recovery process. Addicts need support, care, and training to pass the rehabilitation process successfully
