Abstract

Psychiatric disorders are considered the most important factors behind suicides.
According to W.H.O. about 400,000 people commit suicide every year in the world. Suicide is the
third cause of mortality in Iran. This research is aimed to study the psychological state of selfimmolated women being hospitalized at Imam Khomeini hospital in Urmia.
Materials & Methods: This study consisted of 42 women hospitalized due to self-immolation in 2002.
A Questioner was used to gather the required information. The first part represented sixteen questions
regarding personal data. On the second part twenty eight questions were extracted from the standard
general health questioner (CHQ 28). All the victims were interviewed within the first 18 hours of their
hospitalization. SPSS was used to analyze the data.
Results: The mean age of the sample was 23.01 years old, and 71.49% were married and mostly were
illiterate. Almost all samples used tranquilizers and 59.52% suffered from social disorders. Major
depression among the sample population stood as high as 64.24%. The correlation between between
age, depression, health problems, and insomnia was significant.
Conclusion: The findings of this research show that special attention must be paid to young women

factors can be helpful
