Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus, as a chronic disease, largely affects lifestyle and quality of life. Education could affect quality of life of diabetic patient, however the results of studies have shown traditional and modern methods of education have various effects. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of self-empowerment program through educational package and work shop on quality of life among diabetic patients. Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial. Diabetic patients referring to the diabetes center, affiliated to Urmia University of Medical Sciences, participated in this study. A sample of 40 subjects was selected and they were divided into two groups of 20. A two-part questionnaire was used to collect data. The first part related to demographic information and the second was to assess the quality of life of diabetic patients, using audit of diabetes - dependent quality of life questionnaire. Results: The mean and standard deviation of life quality scores in the pre-intervention were 40/25 ± 7/69 in the workshop group and 39/9±9/00 in the other group, while in the post-intervention, they were 46/00±7/56 and 48/50±5/56, respectively. There is no significant difference between the two groups before and after education in term of quality of life. However, a significant difference was observed in the scores of quality of life before and after the intervention between the two groups. Conclusions: Based on these findings, the use of self-empowerment regardless of the education program tools (workshop or train ing package), can promote self-care skills and thus improve the quality of life in diabetic patients. rected
