Abstract

The nurse–patient relationship is the cornerstone and the most important phenomenon of nursing. In spite of this, there is a dearth of research about this topic in operation room settings. This study investigated the nurse–patient relationship concept in operation room. Materials & Methods: A qualitative content analysis approach was used and a purposive sample of eight nurses, seven patients and two relatives were interviewed in-depth. The observation was also conducted and 14 field notes were written. The verbatim transcripts analyzed using conventional content analysis. Results: Theme of ‘reliance based caring presence’ with three subthemes emerged by which the phenomenon of nurse-patient relationship in operating room could be illustrated. These subthemes were: “nurse centered presence”, “patient centered presence”,” and spirituality-based care “. Six categories expanded and clarified the meaning of these subthemes. Conclusion: The results of the study generated new insights into the nature of nurse–patient relationship in operation room.This Phenomenon is complex with various dimensions; also the spirituality-based care have central and integral role in this. The findings have implications for bedside, education, theory development and further research in this issue
