Abstract
Increasing knowledge and awareness of pregnant women about labor, delivery
and postpartum pain coping strategies are important, and they can lead to the increasing of the reliability,
confidence and self-efficacy in women during labor and delivery. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate
the effect of the childbirth preparation classes on self-efficacy in their coping strategies during childbirth
in pregnant women.
Materials and Methods: This was a quasi- experimental study which was carried out on 150 nulliparous
pregnant women. They were randomly divided to experimental & control groups. Mothers in
experimental group were trained both theoretically and practically by intervention in 8 sessions, while
those in control group received the routine care only. The data were collected by using demographic and
childbirth self-efficacy questionnaires. In order to determine the self-efficacy, the childbirth selfefficacy questionnaire (CBSEI) was applied on pregnant women at 20-23 gestational ages, and at 37
weeks of pregnancy and 24-72 hours after delivery. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 20 software.
Results: The results showed a statistically significant difference between intervention and control groups
(p =0.00).
Conclusion: This study confirms the effectiveness of the antenatal preparation for childbirth educational
program on self-efficacy of pregnant women to cope with labor. Therefore, it is recommended to use
this program as a teaching or complementary method in being prepared for childbirth.
