INTERNET ADDICTION STUDY AT URMIA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS MEDICAL SCIENCES

A variety of Internet applications caused creation of a phenomenon known as
Internet addiction in recent years. The Internet itself is safe tool, its overusing and will increase the
risk of addiction to it. This study was carried out with the aim of determination of amount of Internet
addiction.
Materials and Methods: The study is descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 600
students of Uremia University of Medical Sciences who were using the university public computer
room for Internet relationships. were selected quota randomly. The data collection tool was a doublepart questionnaire. The first section includes demographic information such as age, gender, study
branch and level, as well as some questions about the period of Internet using during a week, time of
use, and the use of the Internet and the second part was yang "Internet addiction test". Data analyzing
was conducted software SPSS / 19.
Results: According to the "Yang Internet addiction test" the mean score of Internet using whole of
study samples, was 20.1267 which was in the normal and acceptable level. The Average score of
Internet addiction in male students and female students respectively was 25.3382 and 18.2668. The
average score of the Internet addiction among the nursing students was 18.5946 (normal), Midwifery
student was 29.5833 (mild), medical students was 17.2906 (normal), dentistry students was 14.8056
(normal), Health students was 20.2246 (mild), Paramedical students was 42.1818 (mild) and medical
emergencies students was 28.2174 (mild).
Conclusion: Since internet dependence can overshadow the students' academic status, therefore the
academicians should create appropriate context for meeting the students free-time and cultural needs,
so that they refer to Internet only in issues such as article review, news and cultural sites, thereby it
should be avoid from wasting useful opportunities by aimless searches in order to entertaining
objectives
