Abstract

One of the problems in contemporary period that many communities had been
suffered is the alienation in different forms. Academic alienation as one form of alienation is a term
that is used to describe separation of students from learning process. Therefore, the purpose of this
research is to investigate student alienation through monitoring cultural capital, economical capital and
social capital of students.
Materials & Methods: This is an analytical and descriptive study. The population was 616 recently
entered students of Urmia University of Medical Sciences in Academic year 2013-2014. 237 samples
were selected by stratified sampling method. The data were collected by four questionnaires named
"cultural capital", "social capital" and "economical capital" and "academic alienation". Their validity
and reliability were examined and confirmed. Independent Samples T-Test, One-Way ANOVA and
Pearson Correlation was used for statistical analysis using SPSS18.8 software.
Results: Findings showed that the alienation of students is almost tolerable and isn’t in critical
situation. However, there is significant difference between alienation of students of medical sciences
and students of medical related fields. Also there is significant relationship between "cultural capital"
and "social capital" and "academic alienation" of students, but there isn’t significant relationship
between "economical capital" and "academic alienation" of students.
Conclusion: Academic alienation among students is an undeniable fact. Paying attention to alienation
and factors affecting on it, can help planners of higher education in the country.
