Abstract

Increasing advances in medical sciences context, and also increase knowledge
and expectations of clients caused healthcare organizations turn to client-based and competitive
environment. This organizations increased endeavor to meet the requirement and high expectations of
patients. Patients have the right expectations that exist in effective patient care centers. In the health
system of many countries in the world, rights are defined for patients to be observed by health
providers essentially. The aim of this study was to determine the gap between current status and the
expectation status based on observance by patients in Urmia.
Materials & Methods:
This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in 2012. The study sample consisted of 385
inpatients from training centers of Urmia University of Medical Sciences. Data collected by using a
questionnaire that reliability and validity of which had been measured by specialists, and by internal
consistency method respectively. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS software for both descriptive
statistics and analytical statistics (t-test and chi-square).
Result: The result showed that the expectations of patients in 5 dimensions of patient’s rights are more
than current status. From observance point of view about patient’s rights, maximum mean of gaping
related to the received complete information (- 1/63), and also minimum mean of gaping related to the
confidentiality and privacy (- 0/36). Correlation analysis showed that a meaningful correlation existed
in all dimensions of patient’s rights between current status and expectation status (p <0/05).
Conclusion: In general the observance about patient’s rights was lesser than their expectation in the
studied hospitals. So the hospitals must implement education in service for healthcare providers to
increase their professional- ethics responsiveness. They should also prospect appropriate processes to
release adequate information to their patients, and participate them in care decisions
