Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is the most common complaint of young girls and one of the
main reasons behind disarrangement in their daily schedule. The main purpose of this study was to
explore the health effects and side effects of fish oil & vitamin B1 on symptoms of dysmenorrhea.
Materials & Methods: In the present study a double-blind clinical trial design was conducted. Data
were collected from 240 high school students in Urmia city by using randomized method, the
participants were divided into four groups, three experimental groups and one control group, each
group containing 60 students. The first group received vitamin B1 tablets (100 mg), the second group
took fish oil capsules (500 mg) and a mix of both fish oil and vitamin B1 was used for third group and
fourth group received placebo. The severity of pain was measured using VAS and the duration of pain
was obtained applying Cox in three separate times; prior to the study, one month and two months after
taking supplements. The data were analyzed by SPSS software.
Result: The reduction of pain intensity in experimental groups showed a significant difference
between three experimental groups and control group (p=0.000). All three experimental groups
reported a reduction of pain duration in the comparison of control group (p<0.000).
Conclusion: considering the digestibility and the health effects of vitamin B1 and fish oil on
dysmenorrhea, these supplements are suggested as an alternative for other drugs
