Abstract

Preterm delivery is a common factor in neonatal morbidity and mortality. The
aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors and outcomes on women admitted with preterm labor
to Valieasr hospital in Zanjan.
Materials & Methods: This retrospective cross sectional study was carried out on 318 preterm cases
and 2784 controls in 2007. The necessary information was recorded by questionnaires. Statistical
analysis was performed using Pearson's Chi square Method.
Results: Of the total 4528 deliveries in 2007, 318 preterm deliveries (7%) were reported. The most
common causes were: 17% over thirty five years old, multiparity 42.5%, previous placenta previa
14% and previous placenta abruption 35.5%, PROM 19.9% , Hydramnious 5.4%, Urinary tract
infection 12.8%.
Conclusion: The risk factors for preterm labor were maternal age, multiparity, and previous placental
abruption; however, further studies are recommended to reduce the occurrence of placental abortion in
the future. In order to reduce preterm labor it is necessary to identify the risk factors and raise public
awareness
