Abstract

The present study aimed to compare aggression, anxiety and depression in high
school teenagers in Saravan city, November 2010.
Materials & Methods: This comparative study covered 125 high school students that were selected
by stratified-random sampling. The Questionnaire consisted of two parts: demographic information
and SCL-90-R test to measure aggression, anxiety and depression. The data were analyzed by T test
for independent groups and F test using SPSS 15 software.
Results: None of the teenagers had a history of alcohol consumption or chronic physical illness. %2-6
had severe aggression, % 6.8 with severe anxiety, and % 26.5with severe depression, and % 17.9 with
increased risk of mental health problems. Girls were significantly more aggressive and anxious than
boys. There was no significant difference in aggression between those living in dorms versus living at
home. However, depression was more among teenagers living in dorms. There was no significant
relationship between parents' educational level, income level, and occupations and child's age and
birth order with the amount of aggression, anxiety and depression.
Conclusion: It is necessary to train parents specially mothers on teenagers' mental health issues and to
improve school counseling center. In addition, planning free-time activities for students living in
dorms equipped with, laboratories, computer centre, library, and sports ground is important
