Abstract
Gingivitis and periodontitis are two of the most common mouth and teach diseases. The primary cause of these diseases is existence of bacterial plaque on teeth surfaces which occurs as a result of poor oral hygiene. Hormonal imbalance which can result in progression of inflammation and periodontal disease in susceptible patients is one of the secondary etiologic factors.
Considering with regard the significance and prevalence of periodontal disease and its complications, imperative solutions must be found to prevent and control it. The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence and the type of periodontal changes and its indices following hormonal therapy for early prevention of periodontal disease.
Methods and Materials : This is a cohort study with a blind sampling using a questionnaire. Clinical examination was done on 72 patients, 42 patients made the case group and 30 patients were included in the control group. The criteria for these patients in the study was existence of infertility and periodontal disease receiving hormone therapy in the case group whereas, the patients in the control group did not receive any hormone therapy. The questionnaire was prepared according to the related indices and was given to the patients after its authenticity was confirmed by the experts. Clinical examinations was done in 3 and 6 months interval, primary indices were measured and recorded and the data was analyzed by SPSS software and Chi-square analyzing.
Results: Based on Rumford periodontal index, after 3 months, there was a significant relationship between progression of periodontal disease and use of drug for treatment of infertility in the case group whereas the periodontal indices of the control group remained unchanged.
Discussion : Considering the significant prevalence of periodontal disease and related complications in human society and according to the results of this study, oral hygiene instruction and plaque control is necessary in infertile patients who are likely to receive hormone therapy.
