Abstract

Hospital infections are one of the problems of hospitals in all countries. Nurse as
a member of the health care team plays a vital role in controlling and preventing these infections. In this
study, the knowledge, attitude and practice of nurses of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences Hospitals
has been investigated regarding infection control.
Material & Methods: This descriptive-analytic study was conducted in Shiraz in 2017. The research
population consisted of all nurses of educational hospitals of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences,
among whom 340 from 10 hospitals were selected as sample size. Data were collected through a
questionnaire and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient in SPSS23 software.
Results: Knowledge score (104.71 ± 12.15), attitude (62.79 ± 8.27) and practice (141.64 ± 14.24) of
nurses about infection control were in good condition. There was a direct and significant correlation
between knowledge, attitude and practice of nurses regarding infection control (p<0.05). There was a
significant relationship between practice with marital status (P = 0.001) and knowledge with nurses
education level (P = 0.000).
Conclusion: Despite the fact that the knowledge, attitude and practice of nurses about infection control
are in a good position, but continuing education courses are essential to increase awareness and
strengthen positive attitudes in them and correct some wrong actions as a result of false beliefs for nurses
and other medical personnel in hospitals
