Abstract
Considering the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease among people in the
world, the aim of this study was to simultaneously investigate the association between the serum level
of xanthine oxidase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes with the severity of coronary artery disease.
Materials & Methods: In this case-control study, 85 patients undergoing coronary artery angiography
participated and were divided in to the three groups considering the results of angiography by Syntax
score as follows: 1. without coronary artery disease (Syntax score = 0); 2. Mild coronary artery disease
(Syntax score˂ 22); 3. severe coronary artery disease (Syntax score ≥22). XO was measured by ELISA
method and GPX activity assay by Coupled assay. The results were compared using SPSS software
version 16.
Results: Our results showed that the control group had ejection fraction higher than the other two groups,
and the EF was an independent risk factor for the incidence of coronary artery disease (OR = 0.349, P
= 0.001). There was a significant difference between the three groups in terms of history of myocardial
infarction (OR = 0.332, P = 0.11). Also serum total cholesterol levels were significantly different
between the groups (OR = 0.400 and P=0.030). XO value was significantly higher in patients with severe
coronary artery stenosis than the other groups but the difference was not statistically significant (P =
0.206). Moreover, with increasing severity of vascular arrest, the level of GPX serum reduced (P
=0.539).
Conclusion: Overall, our results indicated that there are no independent correlation between XO and
GPX factors with the severity of arterial obstruction
