Abstract

Empathic concerns are one of the factors affecting the quality of nurses'
professional life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural model of the relationship
between empathic concerns and compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue in intensive care units’
nurses.
Materials and Method: The type of this descriptive-correlational research was structural equation
modeling. Population comprised of all nurses working in NICU-ICU-CCU and dialysis units in Isfahan
hospitals in 2017. Of these population, 250 nurses (men and women) working in intensive care units
were selected in Alzahra, Nour, Ali Asghar, Amin and Kashani hospitals based on covenience sampling
method and responded to the research tools included Stamms professional quality of life questionnaire
and Davis empathic concerns. Data were analyzed using AMOS software.
Results: The results showed that the structural model of the relationship between empathic concerns
with compassion Satisfaction and compassion fatigue has an appropriate fitness, so that the empathic
concerns variable accounted for 67% of the variance in compassion satisfaction and 13% of variance in
compassion fatigue.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this research the effect of empathic concerns on compassion
satisfaction and compassion fatigue is significant (p  0/05).
